The game is based on the world and some events of Final Fantasy IV. The characters of that game will appear from time to time, but the game focuses on the four core characters of the game. In addition, a brief history of a 
few ties into the game that may need explaining: The world of Final Fantasy IV was tied into Final Fantasy Tactics. The world of Final Fantasy Tactics actually directly stated that Baron Castle, an "ancient ruin" in that world, and a number of other hidden locations were in fact in Ivalice. Primarily, this story is a unique twist and logical extension of Final Fantasy IV, told from a 
completely different perspective, with all new characters, and an all new story.

Where did this story come from? Well, that would Dungeons and Dragons. Myself, Serena (Azrael), FiXXXer (Lucien), and CloudThirteen (Phae-Rel) played out this entire campaign. Following that, we just had to make it into the game you're reading about. The story was amazing, and took over 8 months to play through. It was worth every moment, though, as the characters had an amazing level of depth to them all.
